Our Story

1978 — The Beginning
Tadhg O’Connor Ltd was founded in 1978 in Rathkeale by Tadhg O’Connor Senior. At the time, he was working as a teacher, but like many people in rural Ireland in the late 1970s, he could see change happening. There was growing demand for housing, infrastructure, and local development — yet access to building materials and supplies in the area was limited. He recognised that there was an opportunity to provide something the local community genuinely needed — a reliable, well-stocked builders’ providers that people could depend on. Taking a leap, he stepped away from teaching and started the business from scratch. The focus from day one was straightforward: have the right materials available, offer fair prices, and treat people properly. That approach quickly earned the business a strong reputation locally. Customers knew they could call in, get what they needed, and deal with someone who understood their work and would stand over what they sold. Those early years laid the foundation for everything that followed — not just in terms of the business itself, but in how it operates to this day.
1980s–1990s — Building a Reputation
Through the 1980s and 1990s, the business grew steadily and became a well-known name across Rathkeale and the wider Limerick area. What started as a small builders’ providers began to develop into something more established. As demand increased, so did the range of products — expanding beyond core building materials into hardware, tools and everyday essentials for homes and businesses. This was a time before large retail chains and online ordering, so local knowledge and reliability mattered. Customers depended on having somewhere they could call in, get what they needed, and get straight answers. That’s where the business built its reputation. A lot of the growth during these years came through word of mouth. Tradespeople would recommend us to others, and customers would return time and time again because they knew they’d be looked after. It was also a very hands-on time. Relationships were built across the counter, on delivery runs, and through years of dealing with the same customers. There was a strong understanding of what people needed locally — whether it was for building or maintaining their homes. As those relationships grew, so did trust. By the end of the 1990s, Tadhg O’Connor Ltd had firmly established itself as a dependable and respected supplier in the area — known not just for its products, but for its service, honesty, and consistency. Those years played a huge role in shaping the business — creating the foundation of loyal customers and strong local ties that still exist today.2000s — The Next Generation
As the business moved into the 2000s, the next generation of the O’Connor family became more involved — Brian, Diarmuid, Eoin, and Tadhg Jnr. Having grown up around the business, they understood it from the ground up — how it operated day to day, what customers expected, and the importance of maintaining the reputation that had been built over the previous decades. Each of them brought their own ideas, energy, and areas of focus, helping to drive the business forward while still holding onto the values it was built on. This period marked a shift in how the company approached growth. There was more investment in expanding product ranges, improving facilities, and developing new areas of the business. It was no longer just about supplying materials — it was about offering a more complete service to customers. At the same time, the hands-on, customer-first approach remained unchanged. The transition from one generation to the next wasn’t about changing direction — it was about building on what was already there. That balance between experience and new thinking has been key to how the business has evolved since — allowing it to grow steadily while staying grounded in its roots.
Expansion — Rathkeale & Newcastle West
As the business continued to grow, so did the need to expand beyond its original base in Rathkeale. What started as a single location gradually developed into a larger operation, with further investment in Rathkeale and the addition of a second presence there in 2007. This allowed the business to increase its capacity, improve stockholding, and better serve a growing customer base. Another major step was the expansion into Newcastle West. Opening in Newcastle West was an important move, extending the reach of the business beyond Rathkeale and making it more accessible to customers across a wider part of West Limerick. It also marked a shift from being a single-location business to a more established regional supplier. Alongside this, the offering continued to grow. The Newcastle West branch introduced a garden centre, expanding into outdoor and landscaping products and allowing us to support customers both inside and outside the home. This period of expansion was about more than just adding locations — it was about strengthening the business as a whole.
Furniture & Electrical Showroom
The opening of our 40,000 sq. ft. Furniture & Electrical showroom in Rathkeale in 2007 was an important step in the development of the business. Up to that point, the focus had mainly been on supplying building materials and hardware. This expansion allowed us to broaden what we offered — giving customers the option not just to build or renovate, but to furnish and finish their homes as well. It was a natural progression rather than a complete change in direction. The showroom brought together a wide range of products, including furniture, flooring and homeware, all under one roof. It gave customers the chance to see products in person and make decisions with confidence, rather than relying on catalogues or ordering blind. Over time, this side of the business has grown steadily and become an important part of what we do today, complementing our core builders’ providers and trade offering. It also helped shape the more complete service we aim to provide — supporting customers from the early stages of a project right through to the final touches in their home.
Topline & Euronics Partnerships
Topline
As the business grew, it became increasingly important to stay competitive while continuing to operate as an independent, family-run company. We became long-standing members of Topline, Ireland’s largest DIY and building materials buying group, originally established in 1972 by independent merchants coming together to strengthen their buying power. Being part of Topline gives us access to a wider range of trusted products, strong supplier relationships, and competitive pricing — benefits we pass directly on to our customers. It also allows us to remain independent, combining the strength of a national network with the personal service and local approach we’ve always been known for.
Euronics
In 2018, we joined Euronics, one of Europe’s largest electrical buying and retail groups. This marked an important step forward in developing our electrical and appliance offering, giving us access to leading brands, new technology, and a much broader product range. Through Euronics, we also benefit from ongoing training, industry knowledge, and supplier support, helping us stay up to date with the latest products and trends. For our customers, it means getting the value and choice of a larger retailer, backed by the advice, service, and after-sales support of a local, family-run business.
2020 — Going Online
In 2020, after more than 40 years as a fully in-store business, we made the move online. Like many businesses at the time, we recognised that how people shop was changing. Customers wanted more flexibility — the ability to browse, compare, and order when it suited them. Rather than seeing that as a challenge, we saw it as an opportunity to improve how we serve our customers.
We invested in building a fully functional e-commerce website, bringing our in-store experience online. Today, our website features over 16,000 products across building materials, tools, furniture, electrical, and homeware — giving customers access to our full range wherever they are in the country. We introduced nationwide delivery across all 26 counties, making it easier for customers to access our products beyond our local area. At the same time, we launched a same-day Click & Collect service, allowing customers to order online and pick up in-store when it suits them.
A big focus from the start was making sure the online experience matched what people expected from us in-store — straightforward, reliable, and backed by real support. Our team remains on hand to help with queries, orders, and advice, just as they would on the shop floor. Moving online wasn’t just about keeping up — it was about building for the future. It has allowed us to reach new customers, expand beyond our local area, and continue growing while staying true to what the business has always been about.

2023 — Adare Expansion
In 2023, we expanded into Adare with the acquisition of the well-known Vokes store — a business that had been part of the local community for over 40 years. Vokes was a respected and long-established name in Adare, built by Henry and Hazel Vokes, and known for its quality products, friendly service, and strong connection to the area. When the opportunity came to take it on, it was important to us that we approached it the right way.
Our goal wasn’t to change what people valued — it was to build on it. We worked to maintain the same welcoming atmosphere, product mix, and level of service that customers had come to expect over the years, while gradually introducing new ranges and strengthening the offering as part of the wider Tadhg O’Connor business. Becoming part of the Adare community was a natural step for us. It allowed us to extend our reach while staying true to the same principles we’ve always operated on — local service, trusted advice, and long-term relationships. The Adare store continues to reflect that balance — combining its long-standing reputation with the support, range, and experience of a growing business.

2024 — Plant & Tool Hire
In 2024, we expanded our Newcastle West branch with the opening of our Plant & Tool Hire centre — adding a new service designed to support both trade professionals and DIY customers.
Over the years, we had seen increasing demand for reliable access to equipment, whether for building projects, landscaping, renovations, or smaller jobs at home. The aim was simple — make it easier for customers to get the right tools when they need them, without the cost of buying outright. The hire centre offers a wide range of modern, well-maintained equipment, giving customers confidence that they’re using the right tools for the job.
For trade customers, it provides a dependable local option for sourcing equipment quickly and efficiently. For DIY customers, it opens up access to professional-grade tools that might only be needed for a short period. It also complements our existing offering — allowing customers to source materials, tools, and equipment all in one place.
Like every part of the business, the focus is on keeping things straightforward — clear advice, reliable equipment, and a service people can depend on. This was a natural next step for us, and another way of continuing to build on what we offer, while staying close to what our customers need. Our Plant & Tool Hire centre opened in Newcastle West, adding another key service for both trade and DIY customers.

Looking Ahead
While the business has grown and changed significantly since 1978, our mindset remains the same — keep improving, keep investing, and keep looking after our customers. As customer needs change, we’ll continue to adapt — bringing in new products, new services, and better ways to shop.
At the same time, growth for us has never been about moving away from what we are. It’s about building on it. We’ll continue to invest in our team, strengthen our relationships with suppliers, and improve the overall experience for our customers — whether that’s in-store, online, or over the phone.
